The effects of a simple saline solution prepared using two different pH (4.4 and 8.5) on sperm motility in burbot were investigated. Results were recorded during a 96-hour chilled storage (4°C) in 24-hour intervals. Measurements were focused on the detailed characteristics of motility using 12 parameters obtained from the Computer-assisted Sperm Analysis (CASA). Significantly higher progressive motility (pMOT), distance average path (DAP), distance curved line, distance straight line (DSL), average path velocity (VAP), curvilinear velocity, straight line velocity, and beat cross frequency (BCF) were observed with the activating solution buffered at...

Previous studies have shown that single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) (rs328743478) located downstream of pre-miR-208b in MYH7 gene is correlated with fibre number composition and drip loss in pigs. Because fibre characteristics are linked to meat quality, the aim of this study was to analyse the relationships between rs328743478 polymorphism and meat quality and texture parameters. The study utilised 578 pigs belonging to Polish Landrace, Polish Large White, Puławska, Pietrain, Duroc, and Hampshire breeds. Association study was performed for the first three breeds separately and for all six breeds joined together. Obtained results...

The results obtained from different models for predicting breeding values for clinical mastitis (CM) in Holstein cattle were compared. CM was recorded in 30 882 lactations of 12 793 cows in 8 herds from 1996 to 2016. CM was considered either as an all-or-none binary trait (0 - absence of mastitis; 1 - at least one case of CM per lactation) or as the number of cases. CM is recorded in the first 150 days of lactation or throughout the entire course of lactation. Breeding values were predicted with a single-trait repeatability model and with a bivariate animal model, where CM during the 1st lactation and CM during the 2nd and later...

Bísaro pig, a local endangered swine breed, has gained popularity in the recent years. A complete pedigree was used to evaluate the population structure and investigate the current breed's genetic variability in two reference populations (AlivePop and AliveBpop). Since the breed's foundation, the number of registered animals, producers, and farrowing records has increased. The mean progeny size for sires was 116.17 ± 210.81, and 3.24% of the breeding boars originated 26.54% of all registered births showing a marked unbalanced use of certain sires. The mean calculated equivalent generations was 4.54, and 98.1% of all the animals had known parents,...

The objective of this study was to estimate the frequencies of alleles which produce coat colour in Polish Coldblood horse population, and to verify the hypothesis that coat colour is not considered in its selection. The analysis included 35 928 horses and their parents having been registered in the studbook over a half-century. Allele frequencies in Agouti (A), Extension (E), Dun (D), Roan (Rn), and Grey (G) loci, in parental and offspring generations, were estimated according to test matings and the square root of recessive phenotype frequency. The population structure is in...
