J. Křišťan, A. Hatef, S.M.H. Alavi, T. Policar

Czech J. Anim. Sci., 2014, 59(1):1-10 | DOI: 10.17221/7188-CJAS

Spermatozoa morphology, ultrastructure, and spermatozoa motility traits were studied in pikeperch (Sander lucioperca) after activation in various media (AM 1 - 45mM NaCl, 5mM KCl, 20mM Tris, pH 8.5; AM 2 - 100mM sucrose, 20mM Tris, pH 8.5; AM 3 - 100mM sucrose, 1mM CaCl2, 20mM Tris, pH 8.5) during a 48-hour storage period. The spermatozoon was acrosomeless and differentiated into a spherical nucleus (head), midpiece, and flagellum. The nucleus length and width measured 1.83 ± 0.03 and 1.63 ± 0.02 mm, respectively. The midpiece was located laterally to the nucleus and possessed proximal and distal centrioles and 2-4...

Metabolites of vitamin D and minerals in blood and colostrum of primiparous and multiparous dairy cows postpartumOriginal Paper

Concentrations of calcidiol, calcitriol, and minerals in blood serum and colostrum of 14 primiparous and 16 multiparous Holstein dairy cows during short-period prepartum and postpartum were determined and compared. Blood samples were collected between days 5 and 2 prepartum and 6 h, 12 h, 7 and 21 days postpartum. Nearly 66% of primiparous and 71% of multiparous cows had subclinical postpartum hypocalcemia. Prepartum serum calcium (Ca) and inorganic phosphorus (P) were higher in primiparous cows; Ca decreased in both groups at 6 and 12 h and returned to baseline values 7 days postpartum. Calcidiol and calcitriol concentrations were equal on day 5 prepartum...

Changes over time in genetic parameters for growth in bulls and assessment of suitability of test methodsOriginal Paper

A. Svitáková, J. Bauer, J. Přibyl, Z. Veselá, L. Vostrý

Czech J. Anim. Sci., 2014, 59(1):19-25 | DOI: 10.17221/7190-CJAS

Objectives of the study were to examine alternative measures of growth potential of bulls in testing stations, determine whether genetic parameter estimates of such traits changed over time, and examine whether existing methods for performance testing were appropriate. Records from 1980 to 2010 of 44 425 Fleckvieh bulls in Czech progeny testing stations were analyzed. The following traits were examined: weight at the beginning of the test (150th day of age), weight at the end of the test (530th day of age), gain from birth to the beginning of the test, and gain during the test. Fixed effects in five multi-trait animal models were...

Optimum standardized ileal digestible (SID) tryptophan (Trp) to lysine (Lys) ratio was estimated for 67-96 kg barrows fed low protein diets supplemented with crystalline amino acids (AA). One hundred and fifty Yorkshire × Landrace barrows, with an average initial body weight (BW) of 67.3 ± 3.2 kg, were used in a 28-day feeding trial. All dietary treatments were based on corn, wheat bran, and soybean meal and were formulated to provide 10.5% crude protein and 12.6 MJ/kg metabolizable energy. The dietary SID Lys was set at 0.61% ensuring that Lys was marginally deficient for barrows of this weight range. Graded levels of crystalline l-Trp were...

Czech J. Anim. Sci., 2014, 59(1):35-44 | DOI: 10.17221/7192-CJAS

In August 2007, the 0+ juvenile fish assemblage of the upper River Elbe was surveyed using electrofishing. Thirty-six localities were sampled along a 177 km long section between the towns of Verdek and Brandýs nad Labem (river km (RKM) 136-313). Four localities with natural riverbeds, 14 channelized stretches, nine beaches, and nine backwaters were sampled. Altogether, 4521 0+ juvenile fishes were caught, belonging to 26 species. A decrease in species richness and abundance was evident near Hradec Králové, while decreased species abundance was noted along the navigated stretch below Přelouč. The highest catch-per-unit-effort (CPUE), species richness,...
