Sci., 2025, 70(3):83-92 | DOI: 10.17221/8/2025-CJAS The aim of this study was to analyse the conformation traits and body dimensions of Haflinger mares registered in the Czech Republic studbook. The study focused on the effects of age at studbook entry, year of birth, proportion of Arabian genes, and country of origin on various parameters. Data were collected from 825 mares, including scores obtained during the studbook entry evaluation and body measurements such as withers height measured with a stick (WHS), withers height measured with a tape (WHT), chest girth (CG), and cannon bone circumference (CBC). Based on these data, the bone index (BI) and body massiveness index (MI) were calculated. Statistical analysis was performed using multifactor analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Scheffe’s post-hoc testing method. The results showed that the age at studbook entry significantly affected conformation scores, chest girth, cannon bone circumference, and both indices (MI, BI). Mares aged 3–4 years had significantly higher conformation scores compared to mares aged 5–6 years (P = 0.001) and mares aged 7 years and older (P = 0.000). Mares aged 5–6 years and those aged 7 years and older showed higher CG values (P = 0.002, P = 0.000) and CBC values (P = 0.010, P = 0.001). Furthermore, the year of birth had a highly significant impact on all variables studied. The withers height of mares born between 2011 and 2020 was, on average, 3.49 cm higher (144.84 cm) than that of mares born between 1987 and 2000 (141.35 cm) (P < 0.000). Regarding CG, a statistically significant increase was observed in mares born in 1987–2000 and 2001–2010, with chest girth increasing from 180.45 cm to 183.76 cm (P = 0.016). However, a subsequent decrease to 179.91 cm was noted in mares born between 2011 and 2020 (P = 0.002). The influence of the proportion of Arabian genes was significant for WHS, where mares with a higher proportion of Arabian genes (>1.56%) showed lower WHS (141.74 cm) compared to mares with a lower proportion (143.86 cm) or no Arabian genes (143.01 cm). While ANOVA demonstrated a significant effect of Arabian genes on CBC, Scheffe’s post-hoc test did not confirm this finding. No statistically significant differences were observed in other body dimensions based on the proportion of Arabian genes. The influence of the country of origin was statistically significant for all variables except WHS and WHT. Regarding the conformation scores, mares from the Czech Republic scored lower (6.98) than Austrian mares (7.22, P = 0.000). Additionally, CG was significantly lower in Austrian mares (178.58 cm) compared to Czech mares (182.54 cm, P = 0.000). Austrian mares also had significantly lower MI (P = 0.000) and BI (P = 0.040), with Austrian indices at 124.71/13.31 and Czech indices at 127.77/13.41. Based on this empirical evaluation of the current and original population of Haflingers in the Czech Republic, the connections and influence of individual factors during breeding are revealed. The results of our analysis have built an objective scientific basis and they allow the breeding organisation to determine the further breeding process. |

The objective of this study was to compare the response of three different genotypes to two levels of crude protein in feed mixtures. Cockerels of fast-growing Ross 308, medium-growing Hubbard JA 757 and slow-growing ISA Dual chickens were used in the study. Each genotype was fed diets that differed in protein level: the control group (C) received commercial feed, and the experimental group was fed a diet with a 6% lower protein content (LP). The daily weight gain (DWG) and feed conversion ratio (FCR) were significantly affected by the interaction of genotype and feed protein level. A greater percentage of DWG depression was observed in fast-growing cockerels than in medium-growing cockerels (10% and 6%, respectively), whereas the percentage of slow-growing cockerels negligibly increased (2%). A low-protein diet impaired the FCR only in fast-growing birds (–5%), whereas in the medium- (–2%) and slow-growing groups (+2%), the differences were not significant. Carcass composition significantly influenced only genotype and thigh meat pH. In terms of meat colour, significant interactions revealed that in fast-growing Ross 308 chickens, redness and yellowness did not differ according to diet group; however, in both genotypes with slower growth, significantly greater redness and yellowness were detected in the low-protein diet group than in the control group. The results indicate that genotypes with slower growth have lower protein requirements for growth performance, but lower diet protein has an effect on physical meat quality parameters in these genotypes. |

The role of spent coffee ground extracts as natural antioxidant supplements in the diet of Nile Tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus)Original PaperKhamanitjaree Saripan, Urailuck Pongket, Suriya Udduang, Supalug KattakdadCzech J. Sci., 2025, 70(6):242-252 | DOI: 10.17221/29/2025-CJAS This study evaluated the potential of spent coffee grounds extract (CGE) as an antioxidant supplement in the diet of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus). Four experimental diets with varying CGE levels were formulated: 0% (CGE0, control), 2% (CGE2), 4% (CGE4), and 6% (CGE6). Nile tilapia (initial mean body weight = 38.65 ± 0.85 g) were cultured in fiberglass tanks at a stocking density of 20 fish/m2 under continuous aeration. The fish were fed three times daily at 5% of their total body weight. After an 8-week experimental period, the fish fed CGE-supplemented diets exhibited significantly higher growth rate compared to the control group, with CGE4 showing the most pronounced improvement in final body weight (P = 0.027) and weight gain (P = 0.050). However, no significant differences were observed in average daily growth (P = 0.054), specific growth rate (P = 0.256), survival rate (P = 0.487), and feed conversion ratio (P = 0.105) between the dietary treatments. Fish on the CGE6 diet exhibited the highest total plasma protein (P = 0.001) and immunoglobulin levels (P = 0.000). Moreover, CGE supplementation enhanced superoxide dismutase (P = 0.000) and glutathione peroxidase (P = 0.016) activities relative to the control group. The histopathological analysis showed significantly longer intestinal villi in fish fed CGE-supplemented diets, with the longest villi observed in the CGE6 group (P = 0.000). Fish fillets from the CGE6 group exhibited the highest springiness, while hardness was comparable between CGE6 and CGE4 but significantly higher than in CGE2 and CGE0. Additionally, CGE supplementation significantly influenced the colour expression, increasing lightness (L*) while decreasing redness (a*) and yellowness (b*) values. These findings indicate that 4% CGE supplementation is the most effective concentration, as it significantly promotes growth as evidenced by the highest weight gain, while also enhancing blood biochemical parameters, flesh quality, and antioxidative responses in Nile tilapia. |

Sci., 2025, 70(11):480-488 This study aimed to evaluate the effects of silymarin supplementation during late gestation on reproductive performance, haematological parameters, antioxidant capacity, and gut microbiota composition in sows. Twenty parity-4 crossbred sows (Landrace × Yorkshire) were enrolled and randomly allocated in parity blocks to either a control group (CG; n = 10, basal diet) or a silymarin-supplemented group (SIL; n = 10, basal diet + 200 mg/kg silymarin). The experimental period extended from day 85 of gestation to the completion of farrowing. The results demonstrated that dietary silymarin significantly reduced the number of stillbirths (P < 0.05), without exerting a significant effect on the total number and proportion of live-born piglets (P > 0.05). No notable differences were observed in haematological parameters between the two groups (P > 0.05). However, catalase (CAT) activity and total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC) were significantly elevated in the silymarin group (P < 0.05), and superoxide dismutase (SOD) showed a tendency to increase (P = 0.078). High-throughput 16S rRNA sequencing revealed 1 671 unique feature sequences in the silymarin group and 1 073 in the control group, with 1 600 sequences shared between the two groups. A trend towards increased dominance was observed in the silymarin group (P = 0.082), while both the Shannon and Simpson indices tended to decline (P = 0.087; P = 0.082), suggesting a possible reduction in microbial diversity. Principal coordinate analysis (PCoA) of β-diversity revealed significant structural differences in gut microbiota between the two groups. SIMPER analysis identified Terrisporobacter as the principal genus contributing to these differences. In conclusion, silymarin supplementation during late gestation may enhance reproductive outcomes in sows, potentially through modulation of gut microbial composition and enhancement of systemic antioxidant status. |

Sci., 2024, 69(3):110-117 | DOI: 10.17221/142/2023-CJAS Cryopreservation reduces the antioxidant activity of spermatozoa and makes them more sensitive to damage caused by reactive oxygen species (ROS). The addition of antioxidants to the freezing medium could prevent cryo-damage by mitigating the harmful effects of ROS and, thus, protecting the spermatozoa. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of ellagic acid (EA) on the rabbit sperm traits after freezing-thawing. Semen samples collected from New Zealand White rabbit males were cryopreserved in a BotuCrio freezing medium (Nidacon, Sweden) supplemented with different concentrations of ellagic acid (EA at 0, 0.5, 1.5 and 2.5 mM) using the manual slow freezing procedure. After thawing, sperm motility parameters were evaluated by CASA. The parameters of viability (DRAQ7), apoptosis (Yo-Pro-1), acrosome integrity (peanut agglutinin; PNA), intracellular ROS (CellROX) and mitochondrial activity (MitoTracker) were evaluated by flow cytometry. EA added to the freezing medium at all concentrations led to a significant reduction (P < 0.05) in intracellular ROS in frozen-thawed sperm cells. However, this effect was not reflected in motility parameters. Semen supplemented with 1.5 mM EA also yielded a lower proportion of apoptotic cells compared to the control group. In conclusion, EA supplementation of semen extender demonstrated its antioxidative properties protecting spermatozoa against oxidative damage during cryopreservation. Nevertheless, to draw a definitive conclusion regarding the effect of EA on spermatozoa functionality, additional research is necessary. |

Two groups of fish were stocked in two separate tanks of the climate chamber. One group was stocked at 10-month age (THERMAL), while the other was continually kept under stable photothermal conditions until 19-month-age (CONTROL) and then transferred to a climate chamber. The progress of vitellogenesis was assessed via evaluation of the oocyte diameter at the mid- and late-autumn phases, and the gonadosomatic index (GSI) at the late-autumn phase. Finally, females from the CONTROL group were hormonally stimulated before (WARMING) and after (STABLE) increase of the temperature from wintering to spawning, and the FOM progress, ovulation and plasma levels of 17 α, 20β dihydroxy progesterone (DHP) were assessed. Significantly larger oocytes at the mid-autumn phase (878.8 ± 40.1 μm vs 836.5 ± 46.5 μm) as well as the GSI at the end of the autumn phase (10.5 ± 1.7% vs 7.6 ± 1.1%) were noticed in THERMAL fish. Significantly faster FOM was seen in fish under the WARMING post-stimulation regime, and these fish had higher DHP levels at the moment of hormonal stimulation (5.4 ± 1.4 ng/ml vs 3.8 ± 1.2 ng/ml). According to the obtained results, it appears that photothermal induction of fish at a younger stage might have a positive impact on the first spawning, while the WARMING thermal regime seems to be more efficient in stimulating the FOM in fish upon first wintering. |

Sci., 2021, 66(11):470-475 | DOI: 10.17221/6/2021-CJAS Twelve Liuyang black goats were selected and divided into three groups in a randomized design and they were provided one of the three treatment diets with different chop lengths of ramie silage [1 cm (RS1), 2 cm (RS2), and 3 cm (RS3)]. The length had no effect on pH or the content of acetic acid, butyric acid, and valeric acid. In contrast, NH3-N decreased (P = 0.024) and the ratio of acetate to propionate (P = 0.083) and total volatile fatty acid (TVFA) content (P = 0.087) tended to decrease, and the proportion of propionic acid tended to increase (P = 0.096) with an increase in the chop length of ramie. The increasing lengths of ramie silage decreased the content of total essential amino acids (AA) (P = 0.001), total non-essential AA (P = 0.003), and total AA (P = 0.001), and decreased the concentration of aspartic acid (P = 0.076) in the ruminal fluid. Ramie silage affected xylanase activity (P = 0.043), with greater activity in RS1 than in RS2 and RS3. The recommended chop length of ramie silage is 1 cm because of increasing TVFA, amino acid concentration, and xylanase activity in the ruminal fluid of goats. |
Application strategy for sustainable livestock production with farm animal algorithms in response to climate change up to 2050: A reviewReviewSang-O ParkCzech J. Anim. Sci., 2022, 67(11):425-441 | DOI: 10.17221/172/2022-CJAS Global warming caused by climate change can increase heat stress and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, leading to food problems and livestock crises. Thus, pre-emptive responses are required to mitigate the food problems and livestock crises. The potential of a livestock crisis caused by global warming highlights the need for sustainable livestock production in response to climate change using a farm animal algorithm in order to address the population increase and avoid food problems in the future. In particular, the demand for animal-based foods has increased. Such a climate change threatens the livestock environment, production, reproductive efficiency, animal behaviour and welfare, while increasing the heat stress, livestock malodours, and GHG emissions. For these reasons, it is necessary to understand the concurrent mechanisms related to these effects of global warming, animal nutrition, animal feeding and management, animal heat stress and in ovo injection, and carbon neutral livestock. Climate-smart livestock systems are being implemented to overcome the livestock crisis caused by climate change and to maintain sustainable livestock production. This review emphasises the importance of sustainable livestock production using farm animal algorithms in response to a future livestock crisis caused by climate change in 2050. |

Understanding the genetic variability of fish stocks is crucial to any animal breeding program. The aim of this study was to perform a meta-analysis of genetic parameters that considers the variability between studies for economically important traits in the Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) production. The final dataset from literature review contained 226 estimates of heritability and 53 estimates of genetic correlation across 37 peer-reviewed articles published between 2002 and 2022. Weighted genetic parameter estimates were obtained by fitting a random effect model for all traits studied. Heterogeneity across studies were assessed using the Q statistic and I2 index. Heritability estimates ranged from low to moderate magnitude, indicating that a greater response to selection is expected for body length (0.37), body weight (0.29), body width (0.28), and daily weight gain (0.28), compared to the other traits, body height (0.25) and fillet yield (0.19). Genetic correlations ranged from moderate to high magnitude (0.47 to 0.94), which suggests that part of expression of traits is regulated by the same gene groups. The meta-analysis study provided reliable genetic parameter estimates and these findings may be served as the baseline reference for new Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) breeding programs. |

A total of 32 barrows (33.1 ± 3.49 kg) were randomly allocated to four treatments. Control was the basal diet, and the low, medium, and high treatments were basal diets substituted with WCS (air-dry basis) at 5.0%, 7.5%, and 10.0% from day 1 to 42, and 10.0%, 12.5%, and 15.0% from day 43 to 98, respectively. The results showed that the average daily feed intake (ADFI), feed/gain (F/G), and crypt depth (CD) increased linearly (P < 0.05) with the increasing of WCS. However, the final body weight, average daily gain (ADG), biological value (BV), net protein utilization (NPU), dry matter, crude protein (CP), ether extract, crude fibre (CF), and gross energy decreased linearly (P < 0.05). High treatment significantly deteriorated BW, ADG, NPU, and BV compared to control, low, and medium treatments (P < 0.05). The low and medium treatments showed significantly greater ADFI, apparent digestibility (CP and CF), villus height (VH), VH/CD, relative mRNA and protein expression of occludin, claudin-1 and sodium-glucose cotransporter (SGLT1) than the high treatment (P < 0.05). The highest F/G, CD, relative mRNA and protein expression of cationic amino acid transporter (CAT1) were observed in high treatment (P < 0.05). Our results suggested that WCS can replace 7.5% and 12.5% of diet during growing and finishing periods of pigs, respectively. This is of great significance for reducing feeding costs and alleviating food security crises. |
