6 508 bulls of dual-purpose cattle at performance-test stations were weighed at intervals of 30 days from birth to 420 days. After all editing a total of 74 558 weight records were available. Live weight was evaluated by orthogonal Legendre Polynomial (LP) of degree 4 and by Linear Spline function (SP) with 5 knots. The fixed effects of test-day-year-station of weighing (TDS) and LP within station-year explain together 97% of variability. Variance components were estimated by REML (REMLF90 programme) taking into account heterogeneous variance during growth. The basic model included fixed effects: TDS, and fixed regression on age (LPF), and...

Comparison of calf rearing results and nursing cow performance in various beef breeds managed under the same conditions in north-western Poland

Czech J. Anim. Sci., 2007, 52(10):325-333 | DOI: 10.17221/2342-CJAS

We compared the results of calf maternal nursing and cow performance in 5 beef breeds managed under equal conditions in the region of West Pomerania. The study involved 549 cows and 1 979 calves (1 007 heifers and 972 bulls) of the following breeds: Red Angus, Salers, Hereford, Limousin, and Simmental. The cows and their calves were managed outdoors for one year. Feeding and management systems were the same for all the breeds during the studied period. The calves remained with their mothers until 6 to 9 months of age. Under intensive feeding, we recorded very good calf rearing parameters with very good or good milk performance of the cows. The best...

Effect of estrogen receptor, follicle stimulating hormone and myogenin genes on the performance of Large White sows

Czech J. Anim. Sci., 2007, 52(10):334-340 | DOI: 10.17221/2343-CJAS

The study was designed to determine the associations between the Estrogen Receptor Gene (ESR - PvuII), Follicle Stimulating Hormone Gene (FSHB - HaeIII) and Myogenin Gene (MYOG - MspI) with traits characterizing the sow efficiency comprehensively. Concretely, the age of the first conception (AFC), service period (SP), insemination interval (InI), total number of piglets born (TNB), number of piglets born alive (NBA), number of piglets weaned (NW), lean meat content (LMC), backfat thickness (BFT) and average daily gain (ADG) were included in the study. Significant effects of ESR and FSHB genes on litter size (particularly...

The effect of weaning age on performance and nutrient digestibility of broiler rabbits

L. Zita, E. Tůmová, V. Skřivanová, Z. Ledvinka

Czech J. Anim. Sci., 2007, 52(10):341-347 | DOI: 10.17221/2341-CJAS

The effect of weaning age on growth, feed consumption, digestibility of nutrients, carcass yield, mortality and parasite incidence was studied in a balance experiment. Forty Hyplus® rabbits proceeding from a commercial rabbitry were assigned to four groups of 10 rabbits according to weaning age at 25, 28, 31 and 35 days. The experimental diet had 17.03% crude protein, 4.66% fat and 18.30% crude fibre. Feed and water were available ad libitum. At the end of the experiment, at 84 days of age, six rabbits per group were slaughtered. In the experiment, most results of performance were not significantly (P ≤ 0.05) affected by weaning...

Czech J. Anim. Sci., 2007, 52(10):348-353 | DOI: 10.17221/2339-CJAS

Twenty samples of the aboveground biomass of Amaranthus cruentus (varieties Olpir, Amar 2 RR-R 150, and A 200 D) and A. hypochondriacus (variety No. 1008) were analysed to determine their nutritional value during the experimental period covering five growth stages from inflorescence emergence till full ripening of grain. During plant growth, from day 80 to day 120 of cultivation, the nutritional value decreased. This was demonstrated by an increase in insoluble fibre and a reduction in crude protein content. The content of neutral detergent fibre (NDF) in the dry matter increased from 356 to 420 g/kg (P < 0.01); acid detergent...

LH secretion and 17ββ-estradiol concentration in the blood plasma and hypothalamus of goldfish (Carassius auratus gibelio B.) and common carp (Cyprinus carpio L.) treated with fadrozole (aromatase inhibitor) and GnRH analogues

Czech J. Anim. Sci., 2007, 52(10):354-362 | DOI: 10.17221/2344-CJAS

Fadrozole - a non-steroidal aromatase inhibitor was applied to common carp and goldfish to examine its ability to potentiate the stimulatory action of GnRH analogues on LH secretion in vivo. The goal of the project was to find a substitute for antidopaminergic drugs used with GnRH analogues in fisheries practice to stimulate ovulation in fish bred in captivity. The first trials on goldfish showed a moderate ability of fadrozole to potentiate salmon GnRH analogue stimulation, weaker than that obtained with pimozide (dopamine antagonist). No ovulation in fadrozole-treated fish was observed. Several experiments performed in two consecutive reproductive...
