The objective of this paper was to assess by means of pedometers the period of anoestrus in a herd where the calving interval was 400 days and to detect the influence of some factors (breed, year, season, parity) on the length of anoestrus and the intensity of increased physical activity during oestrus. It was also monitored whether the intensity of increased physical activity would influence the conception rate. The observations were performed in a herd of 243 cows, 80 of them Czech Pied cows (C) and 163 of themHolstein cows (H) during 4 years. The cows were housed together in a free cubicle housing system. The cows of H breed produced 3 790 kg and...
Artificial propagation of African catfish (Clarias gariepinus): the application of a single dose of pellets containing D-Ala6,Pro9NEt-mGnRH and dopamine inhibitor metoclopramide

Czech J. Anim. Sci., 2004, 49(7):289-296 | DOI: 10.17221/4312-CJAS
The effects on reproduction of African catfish (Clarias gariepinus Burchell 1822) were investigated in three experiments conducted under controlled conditions, carp pituitary (at the dose of 4 mg/kg body weight) or Ovopel - a preparation that contains a mammalian GnRH analogue D-Ala6,Pro9NEt-mGnRH (1 pellet/kg body weight) and dopamine receptor antagonist metoclopramide (10 mg/kg) being used as ovulation stimulators. The application of Ovopel induced the statistically significantly (P ≤ 0.01) higher weight of eggs per kg female body weight and the statistically significantly (P ≤ 0.05) higher quality of eggs after 24...

The results of reproduction were tested in females of the African catfish (Clarias gariepinus Burchell 1822) after stimulation of ovulation with carp pituitary (4 mg/kg body weight) or with Lecirelin (15 μg/kg) and metoclopramide (10 mg/kg). After administering the synthetic substance eggs were obtained from all females while in the group treated with pituitary homogenate 7 out of 8 hypophysed females spawned. The applied spawning agent did not significantly influence the weight of eggs expressed in grams, but in the case of females treated with carp pituitary homogenate a significantly higher weight of eggs expressed as the percentage...
Nutritive value of cereals in feeds for common carp

Czech J. Anim. Sci., 2004, 49(7):307-314 | DOI: 10.17221/4314-CJAS
Four isonitrogenous (gross protein content 32%) and isoenergetic (gross energy content 4 080 kcal/kg) diets were prepared by extrusion to investigate the effects of different cereal grains (barley - diet A, wheat - diet B, triticale - diet C, rye - diet D) as carbohydrate compounds of extruded feeds for carp. The physical and chemical properties of the feeds were established. A 60-day growth test was performed in experimental ponds of 40 m2 area. Each diet was fed to three groups of fish (initial average weight 200 ± 10 g). The following rearing effectiveness indices were used in the final evaluation of the growth test: weight gain...

In the study focused on the estimation of the efficiency of beef cattle in the conditions of the Czech Republic, 361 half-carcasses of the offspring of crossbred bulls of tested young beef sires were dissected. The bulls were fattened together and slaughtered at the age of 500 ± 30 days. The tested breeds were Aberdeen Angus (AA), Blonde d'Aquitaine (BA), Belgian Blue (BB), Charolais (CH), Hereford (HE), Limousine (LI), and Piemontese (PI). The control groups were bulls of the Czech Pied (C) and Holstein (H) breeds. The best commercial class according to the SEUROP system was found in the offspring of Charolais sires (3.17). The fat content...
